Compare design options. Verify light levels. Predict source of glare. Document Compliance.
Daylight modeling brings science into the art of daylighting. It removes the design mystery and reveals the pattern of daylight on any building through 3D simulation software.
Daylighting is the practice of using controlled natural light to illuminate a space. It is part science and part art. The end result is a space that minimizes the use of artificial lighting, reduces carbon emissions and positively affects the performance, mood and well-being of the occupants.
BURGESS COMPANY
As the world has come to realize and accept the importance of daylighting spaces for health, wellness and sustainability, daylight modeling software has advanced to provide more efficient and beneficial reports.
We utilize the next generation of modeling software, ClimateStudio, which allows for more accurate design and code compliance analysis compared to previous software, such as Ecotect and DAYSIM.
For light and health analysis, ALFA lets us dig deeper into the effects of daylighting a space by measuring the amount of light received by photoreceptors in the eye that help regulate circadian rhythms. Comparing design options with ALFA is a whole new level of healthy building.
BURGESS COMPANY
We have invested significant resources to make sure the data used in our daylight modeling is accurate and unbiased. Through independent product measurements, we have validated materials files that are used in daylight simulation programs, such as ClimateStudio.
The light diffusion data on Kalwall panels was organized through the National Research Council (NRC) Canada and tested by the Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory (LESO-PB). Our light transmittance values and solar heat gain coefficients were validated by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). In addition, we participated in studies with the University of Oregon’s Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory to collect data on our spectral power distribution. This allows us to accurately provide light dosage measurements at individual wavelengths.
The power of all this data comes together in numerous ways. For example, we can use the ALFA software to determine blue light dosage (which is important to maintain circadian rhythms in daylighting design). The software would calculate how much blue light is received by building occupants using measurements of that wavelength coming through the Kalwall panel, the specific light transmittance value and diffusion pattern.
We’re continually participating in further studies and research to ensure our advancing technology meets the needs of today’s world and delivers the superior performance our company promises.
No other daylighting system on the market can provide this level of independent data validation.
BURGESS COMPANY
We do all our modeling in-house, and have for over 15 years.
Our daylight modeling group is a multi-person team dedicated to executing your model and interpreting your results. One of Kalwall’s principals is an active member of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), International Commission on Illumination (CIE) and the Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE). Our team always stays informed on the latest international lighting and code requirements.
Plus, our entire salesforce is highly educated on the goals and strategies of daylighting to help ensure your design is the best it can be.
BURGESS COMPANY
Daylight is a human right. Kalwall is first and foremost a family company founded on the belief that light is life and daylighting, done right, is something every building occupant deserves.
We are proud to work with architects, engineers, contractors and owners to make sure that they can provide people with unparalleled museum-quality daylighting™.
And we are proud to provide this service for free, highlighting how our translucent technology makes the difference in your design.
Together, we can change the construction paradigm one beautiful, healthy building at a time.
